Domaine Armand Rousseau is one of the most famous and best domaines in Burgundy. Based in Gevrey-Chambertin, the estate is formed of just over 15 hectares, over half of which is Grand Cru.

This is one of Burgundy’s greatest domaines – in terms of history, vineyard holdings and quality of wine. The original Armand Rousseau was at the forefront of the first wave of domaine bottling in the 1930s. He was succeeded by his son Charles in 1959, shortly after they had bought a significant slice of the Clos St Jacques vineyard. Today Eric, grandson of Armand, is in charge of the vines and cellar, with the help of his daughter Cyrielle.

The domaine produces pale, finely structured wines of great elegance and stamina. The simple principle of old (but not ancient) vines and sensible yields dictates the Rousseau style. Sometimes the wines can appear light in their youth, but they nearly always take on weight as they age.

Tasting Notes

95 Points Allen Meadows
An attractively fresh nose features cool and relatively high-toned red cherry, pomegranate and hints of rose petal, the sauvage and humus, all of which is trimmed in admirably discreet wood influence. The mouthfeel of the precise, intense, equally fine and mineral-driven medium weight flavors is remarkably sophisticated, all wrapped in an impressively long and superbly complex finish that flashes focused power. This is terrific and should age accordingly as it’s very firm and compact.

95-97 Points Robert Parker Wine Advocate
The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques is also showing superbly, soaring from the glass with a deep bouquet of red berries, cassis, raw cocoa, candied peel, burning embers and cedary new oak—some 80% new this year. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a richly layered core that’s framed by lively acids and refined tannins. This is a powerful but exceptionally elegant Clos Saint-Jacques that very much merits its place as one of the “big three” chez Rousseau this year.

96-98 Points Vinous
The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has an exquisite bouquet that offers transparent red fruit, fine mineralité, sous-bois, and a sense of vivacity and focus that this vineyard has above all over premier crus. The harmonious palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, orange peel and a velvety-smooth finish. Superb.

96-99 Points Jasper Morris
80% new wood. This shows a lovely flowing red purple colour, not the deepest nor does it need to be. The bouquet just speaks of harmony. Open from the start has never closed down and will be wondrous: even the empty glass breathes a magical bouquet.
