Robert Parker describes Jean-François Coche-Dury as “one of the greatest winemakers on planet earth”, and few would beg to differ. Painfully small yields and meticulously precise winemaking are what give the wines their character and intensity. His top wines spend an astonishing 22 months in barriques and are lightly fined but never filtered prior to bottling.

What is it that makes a domaine a cult? This is arguably the most sought after internationally of all white Burgundy domaines. You might expect to be able to put a finger on why the wines are so good. Are the yields low? Not exceptionally. Is there some wizardry during the vinification or élévage? Sometimes I think it is just that Jean François Coche-Dury has green fingers! His reds are beautiful, perfumed wines as well, though mostly from lesser appellations. They are destalked and only lightly extracted during a relatively short vinification.

Tasting Notes

90 Points Allen Meadows
An elegant, pure and very pretty nose is now displaying just touches of both wood and some secondary development though it’s clear that the ripe orchard fruit and citrus-infused aromas are still developing. There is a lovely sense of energy to the delicious, round and caressing middle weight flavors that exhibit a subtle mineralitly that continues onto the nicely intense and sappy finale that delivers excellent persistence and particularly so for a villages level wine. This is really lovely stuff and while it could easily be enjoyed now, I’d be inclined to allow it another 5 to 7 years of bottle age first.

The 2011 Meursault Village from Coche-Dury goes from strength to strength, and it’s even more integrated and complete than when I last drank a bottle, at the same restaurant (about 50 meters away from the domaine). Mingling aromas of crisp pear and green pineapple with citrus oil, toasted sesame and struck match, it’s medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with superb concentration, racy acids and a long, penetrating finish. This is a wine that transcends the vintage.
