Etienne and his wife Marielle (Patrick Bize’s sister) took over from his father in 1990, making him the 5th generation of Grivots to make wine in Vosne-Romanée. In the 1930s it was one of the first domaines to bottle and sell the wines themselves.

The Grivots go back a long way in Burgundy. Jean Grivot, whose name continues to appear on the labels, took over from his father in 1955 and handed on to his son Etienne in the early 1980s.

There is an average age of 45-to 50-year-old vines across this 15ha domaine which covers 22 appellations (18 red) with holdings in Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg. Etienne produces a range of stunning wines which possess real depth and class.

Tasting Notes

92 Points Allen Meadows
While the nose does display some maturity the ripe, gamy and very earthy dark pinot fruit aromas still possess some primary characteristics. There is fine vibracy to the mouth coating, suave, deep and impressively scaled and concentrated medium weight plus flavors that display plenty of power and a certain textured quality on the firm, persistent and slightly austere back end. For my taste this has reached a point where it could be drunk with pleasure but I will be holding my bottles for another 3 to 5 years first as there is still some upside development potential remaining.

92-95 Points Robert Parker Wine Advocate
Its terroir immensely benefited from the dryness of the vintage,” said Grivot while serving his outstanding 2002 Clos Vougeot. Aromatically, this bold wine reveals loads of spicy red cherries. On the palate it is wonderfully sweet, velvety-textured, and extroverted. Copious quantities of red cherries, spices, candied raspberries and earth envelope this beauty’s ripe tannin. It will be delicious relatively young and should age extremely well.
