Established in 1860, Goulburn Valley’s Tahbilk Winery has been run by the Purbrick family for the last five generations, since their purchase of the estate in 1925. Recognised as the oldest family-owned winery and vineyard in Victoria, Tahbilk Winery prides itself on maintaining many of the heritage features that have been integral to the property since its inception. Tahbilk is now home to 5 generations.
The vineyard has some 200 hectares under vine which includes the rare French Rhone Valley whites of Marsanne, Viognier and Roussanne; and the Rhone reds – Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvedre. Vineyard plantings extend back to Tahbilk’s founding with original pre-phylloxera Shiraz vines still surviving from 1860.
96 Points James Halliday
The colour (as is usual) is not strong, but the hue is good; an elegant medium-bodied, finely boned and structured wine; more to do with what it does not say than what it does, ie moderate alcohol and restrained oak. For all that, this is one of the great wines for classicists. All the vines were planted in 1860, and there has been no replacement of dead vines with young vines, not even using cuttings from the old; 275 dozen made.
