Established in 1860, Goulburn Valley’s Tahbilk Winery has been run by the Purbrick family for the last five generations, since their purchase of the estate in 1925. Recognised as the oldest family-owned winery and vineyard in Victoria, Tahbilk Winery prides itself on maintaining many of the heritage features that have been integral to the property since its inception. Tahbilk is now home to 5 generations.
The vineyard has some 200 hectares under vine which includes the rare French Rhone Valley whites of Marsanne, Viognier and Roussanne; and the Rhone reds – Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvedre. Vineyard plantings extend back to Tahbilk’s founding with original pre-phylloxera Shiraz vines still surviving from 1860.
93 Points James Halliday
Medium red-purple; the moderately intense bouquet is smooth, with pleasingly sweet cherry/raspberry varietal fruit, the oak subdued. The palate, while driven by fruit, is very much the iron fist in velvet glove style, the tannin and extract management excellent. Reminiscent of the 1971 Tahbilk Shiraz tasted a few days previously in another context.
