Rockford can only be described as an icon, no matter how overused that word may be.
It has a devoted band of customers who buy most of the wine through the cellar door or mail order. Rockford Wines feature high-quality traditional wines made from some of the best old Barossa vineyards.
The winery and cellar door sales are part of a paved courtyard surrounded by stone buildings dating back to the early settlement of Krondorf.
The ‘SVS’ wines are typically available only at the cellar door and are produced in amounts of 100-300 cases and released after 6-8 years in bottle.
95 Points Huon Hooke
Deep, bold red colour laced with purple; plum pudding, fruitcake and subtle herb aromas, a suggestion of roasting meats, oak not discernible, but the fruit is savoury, mellow and not especially primary. It’s medium-full bodied and the same softly savoury but drying tannins and flavours are present, all consistent with the maker’s style. There is a restrained fruit sweetness at its core, and appealing balance in the flavour, bouquet and mouth-feel. Good length and satisfying to drink. A sotto voce Basket Press, drinking well already. Drink 2022-2037.
