The story of Kumeu River wines is the pioneering story of the Brajkovich family, which also parallels the story of New Zealand wine. Having originally arrived from Živogošće in Croatia in 1937 with previous viticultural experience, Mick and KatéBrajkovich purchased land in Kumeu in 1944 to start a vineyard.

Over the years, as the family moved down different generations, Mick and Katé’s legacy evolved into Kumeu River. Mick’s grandson, Michael, became New Zealand’s first ever Master of Wine.

As winemaker, Michael Brojkovich’s specialty is producing world-class Chardonnay, one that draws influence from the classic Old-World styles in Burgundy. Rather than having a big bold buttery oak presence, these wines are lighter, more refined styles.

As well as producing world-class Chardonnay, Kumeu River also produces exceptional Pinot Noir and Cremant.

Tasting Notes

95 Points Bob Campbell MW
Concentrated chardonnay with peach, grapefruit, citrus and a suggestion of oyster-shell and mineral flavours. A ripe and obviously youthful wine, with a slightly phenolic backbone and a lengthy finish. Should develop well with bottle age.
