2016 Domaine Roulot Meursault ‘Perrières’ 1er Cru

$2,599.00

Jean-Marc Roulot has developed something of cult-like status for his wines, perhaps second only to those of Coche-Dury in the village of Meursault.  The reasons for this are quite simple: they are of excellent quality; they can be exceedingly difficult to obtain; and above all, they are absolutely compelling.

Drawing from a little less than nine hectares of vineyards, including four premier crus of painfully small sizes, the vineyards have all been organic for around 20 years, and in more recent times are gradually being converted to biodynamics.

Roulot’s wines are invariably very complex wines, whilst less rich than those of, say, Comte Lafon, they are still fully-flavoured and age superbly.

Description

94 Points Allen Meadows
Much more restrained aromas grudgingly reveal notes of white orchard fruit, acacia, wet stone and plenty of citrus elements. There is excellent volume to the mouth coating and intensely mineral-driven flavors that possess plenty of that lovely sense of underlying tension that continues onto the markedly dry but not really austere finish that is akin to rolling rocks around in your mouth. This crystalline effort just has another dimension of depth and is a wine that should age well over the next decade.

97 Points Robert Parker Wine Advocate
One of the high points of the vintage, Roulot’s 2016 Meursault 1er Cru Perrières is extraordinarily good, unfurling in the glass with a deep but youthfully reserved bouquet of green apple, wet stones, citrus oil, white flowers, beeswax and fresh pastry. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny, with incisive acids, striking structural tension and a sense of elegance that renders this wine deceptively charming despite its tightly-coiled core and immense reserves of depth and concentration. That elegance makes drinking a bottle today a decidedly pleasurable experience—after all, drinking a young, tight-knit Meursault Perrières can sometimes be a rather brutalizing experience—even though the wine is really built for extended bottle age.
