2010 Domaine François Raveneau Chablis ‘Montée de Tonnerre’ 1er Cru

$479.00

Not only does the Raveneau family own many of the finest sites in the appellation, but their wines have a steely magnificence that captures the essence of Chablis’ distinctive terroir. The greatness of Raveneau’s Chablis has even led some to suggest they deserve an appellation of their own.
Raveneau wines are famous for their longevity. In fact, many believe that a top Raveneau Chablis doesn’t hit its stride until it’s at least 8 to 10 years old. At this time, the wines not only acquire even greater richness, but layer upon layer of previously hidden flavors are revealed.
Along with René and Vincent Dauvissat, Raveneau pioneered the use of Côte d’Or winemaking in Chablis, including barrel fermentation and extended lees contact.

Description

94 Points Allen Meadows
Almost invisible wood frames the still impressively fresh, pretty and complex nose that is composed of dried flower, citrus zest, mineral reduction and tidal pool aromas. The well-concentrated flavors possess a lovely sense of verve and the focus is maintained thanks to the moderately firm acid spine shaping the intense and strikingly persistent finish. I have tasted this several times in the past three years with mostly consistent reviews as the scores that have ranged between 93 and 94 points. Note that I say “mostly consistent reviews” because some bottles seem basically ready yet this most recent example (2019 bottle), was clearly in need of more time.

94 Points Robert Parker Wine Advocate
Notes of oatmeal, waxy citrus rind, crisp yellow apples and white flowers introduce the 2010 Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre, a medium to full-bodied, satiny and multidimensional wine that has begun to acquire some supplemental texture with bottle age while remaining lively and precise, concluding with an elegantly chalky finish. The 2010 isn’t as powerful as the brooding 2012 served alongside, nor is it as tensile and incisive as the 2014, but it is on a similar qualitative level and numbers among the vintage’s high points.

18.5/20 Jancis Robinson
Green apples and tight. Tense and limpid. But awfully young.
