2009 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg Grand Cru

$4,899.00

Domaine de la Romanée Conti is co-owned by the de Villaine and Leroy/Roch families, the former successors to Jacques-Marie Duvault Blochet who bought the vineyard of La Romanée Conti in 1869, the latter since acquiring the shares of other descendants of Duvault-Blochet in 1942. The Domaine is today run by Aubert de Villaine and Henri-Frederic Roch. Many people in Burgundy just refer to ‘DRC’ as “the Domaine”.

The domaine has 30 hectares of vineyards, all Grand Crus. As well as the the 1.8 hectare monopole La Romanée Conti, the Domaine purchased its other monopoly, La Tâche, in 1933, along with significant holdings in the grand crus of Richebourg, Romanée St Vivant, Grands-Echezeaux, Echezeaux, and Le Montrachet at various points in the 19th and 20th centuries. Corton was added in 2009 with Corton-Charlemagne to be released in 2018. The Domaine is the largest owners of each of the red wine grand crus.

Description

97 Points Allen Meadows
A heavily spiced and notably ripe nose features fresh notes of plum, mocha and cassis that are sprinkled with exotic spice notes that continue onto the expansive and tautly muscular broad-shouldered flavors that are, most surprisingly, almost as fine as those of the RSV yet even slightly more complex with the same finely grained tannins. The length is similar but at present, the extra dimension of depth gives this the barest of edges. Either way, this is genuinely sensational.

The 2009 Richebourg is a dramatic wine. In 2009 there is so much fruit that the tannins are barely perceptible. With time in the glass dark notes of tar, smoke, licorice and violets develop, adding tons of complexity to the fruit. This is a huge, vertical wine that captures the essence of Richebourg in its towering fruit and structure. Layers of fruit saturate every corner of the palate as the wine builds to a deeply satisfying crescendo of head-spinning aromas and flavors. Anticipated maturity: 2024-2059.

18.5/20 Jancis Robinson
Very dark indeed. Very rich and sumptuous nose. The epitome of richness. In 2009 this seems more obviously rich than the Romanée-St-Vivant. Certainly on the nose. Then it lifts itself out of its wallow in ripe fruit to dance on the palate. The huge intensity of ripe fruit just fails to hide the massive charge of tannins here. Very refreshing on the finish. Not a heavyweight but very entrancing. More obvious sweetness here than on the Romanée-St-Vivant.
