2006 Domaine Armand Rousseau Chambertin Grand Cru

$5,900.00

Domaine Armand Rousseau is one of the most famous and best domaines in Burgundy. Based in Gevrey-Chambertin, the estate is formed of just over 15 hectares, over half of which is Grand Cru.

This is one of Burgundy’s greatest domaines – in terms of history, vineyard holdings and quality of wine. The original Armand Rousseau was at the forefront of the first wave of domaine bottling in the 1930s. He was succeeded by his son Charles in 1959, shortly after they had bought a significant slice of the Clos St Jacques vineyard. Today Eric, grandson of Armand, is in charge of the vines and cellar, with the help of his daughter Cyrielle.

The domaine produces pale, finely structured wines of great elegance and stamina. The simple principle of old (but not ancient) vines and sensible yields dictates the Rousseau style. Sometimes the wines can appear light in their youth, but they nearly always take on weight as they age.

It’s as though the Clos de Bèze and Chambertin have switched places in 2006 as here the nose is positively kaleidoscopic with a huge range of aromas and spice elements along with a hint of menthol. There is excellent freshness and vibrancy to the pure, round, rich and focused full-bodied flavors that carry obvious muscle and minerality on the deep, powerful and hugely long finish. This is an extremely impressive effort and one of the finest wines of the vintage. Not surprisingly, this hasn’t changed a great deal since my last review except that the length is now even more phenomenal and the supporting tannins are a bit more apparent. While it’s true that the balance is so good that that this could be enjoyed now, it would be unfortunate to leave so much upside potential unrealized and thus I would advise waiting for at least 5 more years first though it should easily be capable of rewarding 8 to 10.

Tasted blind in Bordeaux, this is an exquisite Chambertin. It soars from the glass with pure Maraschino cherry, redcurrant, orange-blossom and white peach with supreme purity and delineation. Like a great Grand Cru, it seems to gain momentum upon contact with the air. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine precision, a more feminine Chambertin than other vintages but it has filigree tannins and a silky smooth finish that is utterly seductive.
