2005 Guigal Cote Rotie ‘La Mouline’

$800.00

Guigal is the most famous produer in Côte Rôtie and one of the finest in the Rhône Valley. It was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal, following his departure from Vidal-Fleury, where he had worked for just under twenty years. His son, Marcel, joined the company in 1961 and is now the head of the company.

Guigal pioneered the notion of single vineyard Côte Rôties and his 3 most famous wines, La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque are amongst the most sought after wines in the world today.

Marcel Guigal’s attitude to winemaking is typical of the simple genius that one seems to stumble upon when looking at any of the world’s greatest winemakers – low yields, organic viticulture and little or no intervention in the cellars – in short, a respect for nature and a passion for the wine itself.

Description

100 Points Robert Parker Wine Advocate
Similar to the powerful 1988, the inky/purple-colored, dense 2005 Cote Rotie La Mouline offers a stunning perfume of espresso roast, licorice, pepper, blackberries, and black cherries intermixed with hints of chocolate and spring flowers. Powerful, super-concentrated, and ruggedly-constructed with a boatload of tannin, this is a wine to forget for 4-5 years, and drink over the following 25-30. It is the densest, most tannic vintage of La Mouline since 1988.

99 Points Wine Spectator
Extremely dense, with Turkish coffee and bittersweet cocoa notes leading the way for a huge core of macerated plum and currantfruit, warm fig reduction and hoisin sauce notes. The long, graphite- and toast-driven finish sails on and on. Best from 2012 through 2030.

18.5/20 Jancis Robinson
Heady and burgundian. Subtle and very hedonistic. Lots of fruit and spice and the tannins are not dominant in fact. Very dense and more masculine than most Moulines. They creep up on you! The driest Mouline I can remember. Spicy with strong liquorice notes – very firm.
