The 1999 Barolo Vigna Colonnello is, as always, elegant and approachable in style. Deeper in tonality than the regular bottling and with a sweeter nose redolent of kirsch, wild fennel, and rose petals, it is well structured, but supple with velvety tannins, much fruit and tar, and a refreshing, invigorating acidity.
92 Points Antonio Galloni
Dark ruby. The Colonnello is decidedly more vibrant, with notes of toasted oak, licorice, and sweet dark fruit on a medium-bodied frame with notable length and fine, silky tannins. It is an exceptionally elegant and refined Barolo made in an understated rather than bold style. Considering the vintage it is fairly accessible today, but my guess is that it will peak between ages 15 and 20. A fine effort.
