1999 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

$849.00

With more than 500 years of history and the lion’s share of one of Burgundy’s most hallowed grand crus, Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé is a cornerstone of Burgundian legend and a vinous dream for modern connoisseurs.

Certainly the greatest estate in Chambolle-Musigny if not in greater Burgundy, de Vogüé for 20 generations has been steward of the village’s top terroirs. The estate owns some 80 percent of grand cru Le Musigny, and a significant portion of grand cru Bonnes-Mares. Its premier cru Chambolle-Musigny is crafted exclusively from younger-vine fruit in Musigny and its Musigny Blanc is crafted from younger-vine Chardonnay grown also in Musigny.

The style of de Vogüé is the epitome of Chambolle—delicate aromas, refined yet profound flavors, a finish made of silk. These are wines that come into their own not ten years down the line but 30; a cellar without a selection of de Vogüé is a cellar missing the soul of Burgundy.

This is slowly beginning to unwind to reveal a still cool, reserved and supremely elegant nose of drop dead gorgeous pinot aromas as well as a mix of stone and red and black fruits. It is already showing excellent complexity, fine intensity and very fine length all the while exuding an unmistakable level of class and refinement. There is still a touch of youthful toughness on the finish though after an hour or so of air, it begins to mellow out so the ’99 1ers has not quite yet arrived at its peak drinkability, at least not for my taste. Tasted multiple times with consistent notes. It bears pointing out that this is evolving slowing and while it certainly can be enjoyed now with 30 minutes or so of air, it will need another 5 to 8 years before it arrives at its full apogee.

The Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru 1999 is deep in color. It has a lovely savory bouquet with hints of Italian cured meats and bacon fat intermingling with briary scents, all with really impressive intensity. The palate is full-bodied and well balanced. There is clearly a bit of sinew here. Truffle and sappy black fruit form the second half with a saline note urging another sip toward the finish. This punches above my expectations, though I would be tempted to keep bottles down in the bunker for another three or four years. Like many 1999s, this is in for the long haul.
