Germany
A haven for white varieties

Discover the  haven for white varieties

Germany is rightly regarded as one of the top wine-producing countries in the world, and today its wines have never been riper for exploring. Its main grape is the white riesling variety, and while it is the great – generally sweeter – styles that made its name, today’s production is mostly dry and made to go with food. This change in direction has given us a wealth of different styles to enjoy.
Germany is also making superb whites from pinot blanc (here known as weissburgunder) which shares the same precision as riesling while having a broader, food-friendly palate.

It may surprise some to learn that half of Germany’s production is red and that spätburgunder (pinot noir) predates riesling in Germany by several centuries. The wines are undergoing a remarkable quality transformation thanks to better winemaking and warmer ripening conditions, and the results are well worth seeking out.
